Pets: Cancer and Animals

Cancer
It is inevitable, either through genetics or through the environment, that some dogs will get cancer. In the past, this dignosis was the "kiss of death" for most dogs. But much progress has been made over the years, and treatments have improved considerably.

One of the most notable changes has been the use of diet as a form of therapy. While conventional chemotherapy, radiation and steriods are still used; they are used together with a high fat diet. Tumors need carbohydrates for energy, and a diet high in fat and protein and low in carbohydrates makes tumors energy-deficient and can literally starve them. This combination of treatments has been successful in many cancer cases.

The noted veterinary cancer specialist, Dr. Gregory K. Ogilvie of Colorado State University's Department of Clinical Sciences, suggests following the percentages listed below for making a cancer diet for your dog.

*  37% animal protein
*  32% fat - mostly from animal sources
*  21.6% carbohydrates
*  3.5% Omega-3 fatty acids
*  2.5% DHA (fatty acids)
*  3.4% Arginine (amino acid)

This diet provides adequate protein for the dog to heal during the process of treatment and not enough carbohydrates to sustain the tumors.
