Folic Acid has many beneficial properties, including reducing homocysteine levels and preventing fetal abnormalties. Each capsule contains over 30µg of organic folic acid. Studies show that if women od childbearing age (15 to 45) take at least 400µg of folic acid daily, the risk of neural tube defects (birth defects) such as spina bifida and anencephaly could be reduced by half. Asparagus also contains asparaginase, an enzyme recommended for some forms of cancer in he blood. The USP Drug Information book (1998; 18th edition, pp 3212,3215) lists asparaginase as treatment for acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myelomonocytic leukemia (AML), Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In order for cells to grow, they need a chemical called asparagine, an amino aacid synthesized from asparatic acid. Cancer cells cannot produce their own asparagine, so they rely on the normal cells to live. Asparaginase, however, breaks down asparagine in the body, thereby inhibiting unwanted cell growth.
